“I exercise so that I can eat whatever I want!”

This is was me for the last 10 years (since I was 24 years old). The only reason why I did any kind of physical activity (e.g. jogging, walking, running) was to eat whatever I wanted. No limits, no regulations.

Sure it worked back when I was in my 20’s. How wonderful it was to be young and eat all those wonderful foods with minimal effects.

My faves were fries, burgers, pasta, gummy sour candies, ice cream, pizza. You name it, I loved it!

Wait… I still love it! But wait… I eat it and I exercise but now my body absorbs it all.

Now I’m in my 30’s, trying to enjoy life with food but yet trying to be a good role model to my kids and live a healthy life without being too extreme.

After carrying my 4 kids and living off of pizza and ice cream my bad eating habits were hard to kick. My husband and I were guilty of digging into the ice cream as soon as all 4 kids were in bed. It became a routine. It became a habit. We couldn’t control it.

The usual “eat what I want and exercise 3 times a week (for 30 minutes max)” routine wasn’t cutting it. I needed change something if I truly wanted to lose some weight.

I googled and googled and researched everything from diet pills, weight loss systems, cost of the gym, to in home exercise routines.

I don’t know about you but being a mother of 4 and being an educator in Hawaii does keep my pockets and bank accounts pretty shallow. Most of the weight loss systems were upwards from $150. There are tons of diet pills in the market. How would I know which one to get? On the plus side I did find many options for in home exercise routines.

What could I do that wouldn’t cost too much and would still allow me to eat foods I enjoy? Let’s get real! My family couldn’t handle me being on a strict diet. I would not be a very lovely person. Food makes me happy.

By doing these 3 things I was able to get a kick start to a healthier life:

  1.  My Fitness Pal The app is available for iPhone and Android users. This was the most important tool to help me cut my bad eating habits. Best part it’s FREE! I didn’t go extreme. I ate the foods I love but it helped me to control the amounts that I ate. You can set it to lose weight, gain weight or maintain your current weight. I set my goal to lose 2 lbs per week. Based on my personal information, I was allowed 1200 calories per day. If I wanted my fave fries, I would have to eat on the lighter/healthier side for my other 2 meals. AND if you exercise you get additional calories to eat!
  2. I set an exercise goal. I started off with something manageable and something that I knew wouldn’t be discouraging. No excuses. It’s all a matter of finding what works for you and your situation. Check out this workout I started off with No Gym Workout Plan. Eventually I made time for the treadmill & bike or a jog outdoors.
  3. Fitbit Charge 2 Although the app has a step counter it wasn’t accurate because I didn’t always have my phone on me. I’ve been wanting a Fitbit for a long time and I was lucky enough to get it for Mother’s Day. It can be found at Wal-mart or here on Amazon.com. Not sure what color you would like? Get the changeable bands here on Amazon.com. I love mine! I set my goal to 10,000 steps a day. You can totally do it! It also can read your heartbeat and track your sleep routine. There are also reminders to move around if you’ve been sitting too long. It’s easy to get fixated on it watching your step counts increase.

I still have a long road ahead to living a  healthier life but the My Fitness Pal app, weekly exercise goal and my Fitbit got me on a great kick start. Since I started I have lost 15 lbs. It’s what worked for me. Find your thing!

Hope this gives you some ideas and/or motivation to get a kick start!

I would love to hear about your fitness stories!

I’ve used myfitnesspal before, and it really does open your eyes as to what you eat every day. Some good tips, I have an activity tracker too, those two combined is definitely a great start!

Great post. I need to get healither. I do like my Fitbit, hold me slightly more accountable. Eating healthy seems to be my downfall lately.
